Thank you for stopping by my blog today. Tibeca from Sewing by Ti is hosting this blog tour and the theme is of course, Valentine’s Day inspired (red, white and pink colors). I chose to use an antique rose rayon slub jersey solid knit fabric from BOHO Fabrics and the Claire Cardigan Pattern from Seamingly Smitten pattern Click here (affiliate link). I’ve had this in my stash since I purchased it a couple of months ago and had no idea it was a slub knit. My last project, was also a slub knit, but this one has a different feel as it is 95% rayon and 5 % spandex. Now let’s get into more details.

The Pattern

I am a lover of cardigans so the Claire Cardigan was an obvious choice for me. Cardigans are a staple piece in my wardrobe so of course, I had to purchase the pattern (retails for $8 currently). The pattern ranges from sizes XS – XXXL and it has many variations such as tall, petite and regular size options. This cardigan has pocket options, long or short sleeves, optional cuffs, and other great options that you can change up the look of the cardigan. Using different fabrics can also give your cardigan a different look and feel. This is an easy pattern for beginners as it took me about 25 minutes to cut and assemble the pattern pieces. Altogether, you will end up with 2 pattern pieces (sleeve and front/back). The sizes are easy to cut, even if you print your pattern in black and white such as I do.

I didn’t have any issues with the instructions (21 steps with photos) and it took me a couple of days to complete this cardigan (approx. 3 hours altogether). The most difficult part will be the pockets, but my suggestion is to pin, pin and pin some more. Adding the sleeve to to armcyce was no problem either as I pinned and I didn’t have to gather the sleeve cap as it stretched a bit to fit the armcyce. The size I selected based on my measurements is XXL and this worked out great except for the sleeves were too long so I had to cut off about 3″ and I didn’t go with the cuff option. I started to but I didn’t cut the cuffs on the right direction of the fabric so it didn’t stretch when attaching the cuff to the sleeve so I ditched the cuffs.  Instead I hemmed the sleeves and that worked out just great. On the next cardigan, I will raise the pockets a bit higher, but other than that, no other changes to my next cardigan.

The Fabric

As I mentioned earlier, I selected a jersey knit rayon and that worked out well. The only thing I didn’t get from the website were care instructions nor stretch percentage, but that isn’t a major issue. This fabric is a little bit slippery so it is important to pin as much as you can. I used a zig zag stitch and a stretch stitch for cover stitching the slit. I don’t like the look of the zig zag stitch so I’ll be happy to use my serger for my future knit projects. I like the feel of this fabric as it is light and breathable. Today as I took pictures, it was a bit windy so I was cold, but generally, I’ll be able to wear this cardigan all year long as California doesn’t get very cold. I like to cover up, even during the hot California summers, so this breathable fabric will do just fine.

As I continue on my sewing journey, I’m beginning to find my style and fill the holes of what I’m missing in my wardrobe. You’ll be seeing a lot more of these cardigans in the near future. As we celebrate the month of love, remember “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” 1Corinthians 13:6-7
